Very peculiar wind from BD+53°2790, the optical counterpart to 4U 2206+54

2008

BD+53 2790, an O9.5Vp star, is the optical counterpart to the HMXRB 4U 2206+54. This system was classified initially as a BeX, but observational evidence soon stressed the need to revise this classification. The permanent asymmetry in the H-alpha line profiles (in contrast with the cyclic variations shown by Be stars), the variations in the profile of this line in time scales of hours (while time scales from weeks to months are expected in Be stars), and the lack of correlation between IR observables and H-alpha line parameters, strongly suggest that, while BD+53 2790 contains a circunstellar disc, it is not like the one present in Be stars. Furthermore, there is evidence of overabundance o…

Gastro-Intestinal-Stromal Tumors (GIST) – An Unexpected Finding in Two Cases

2020

Abstract Being considered a rare form of malignant neoplasm, stromal tumours are part of sarcomas group, they account for ~5% of all sarcomas (1), which develop from the supporting tissues of the body and have as a starting point special cells located in the wall of the gastrointestinal tract, called interstitial cells - described by Cajal. Although this type of tumour formations poses the problem of diagnosis, when it is made early and surgical and oncological treatment is prompt, the prognosis improves considerably.

What Do We Know About the Second Moment of Financial Markets?

2021

Recent research shows that the vast majority of scientific studies published in leading finance journals fails scientific replication (Hou, Xue, and Zhang, 2020; Harvey, Liu, and Zhu; 2016). This study argues that p-hacking, publication pressure and the selection bias from leading finance journals are perhaps not the underlying root cause for this issue. We show that standard methodologies often used in finance research are inevitably sample-specific due to the very nature of financial markets. While the consensus of earlier research postulates a rejection of the time-honored Levy hypothesis, our results strongly indicate that the variance of variance does not exist in any of the financial …

What is French for déjà vu? Descriptions of déjà vu in native French and English speakers

2015

Little is known about how people characterise and classify the experience of deja vu. The term deja vu might capture a range of different phenomena and people may use it differently. We examined the description of deja vu in two languages: French and English, hypothesising that the use of deja vu would vary between the two languages. In French, the phrase deja vu can be used to indicate a veridical experience of recognition - as in "I have already seen this face before". However, the same is not true in English. In an online questionnaire, we found equal rates of deja vu amongst French and English speakers, and key differences in how the experience was described. As expected, the French gro…
